This Year’s Go-To’s for Essential School Improvements
This Year’s Go-To’s for Essential School Improvements
December 16 by Boys Town Contributor

Navigating the complexities of modern education requires a strategic approach to essential improvements. This guide highlights key areas to focus on to ensure your school thrives in the coming year.

Removing Devices from the Classroom is a Must but Not Without a Plan

Removing devices from the classroom is essential, but it must be done thoughtfully. Here’s how to implement this change effectively:

  • Replacement Behaviors: Simply taking away phones isn’t enough. We need to re-teach students how to interact and communicate without their devices. Incorporate group activities that require face-to-face interaction and use engaging teaching methods like 'gamification' and project-based learning to capture students’ attention.
  • Addressing Anxiety: For many students, phones serve as a safety net. Removing them can increase anxiety, especially for those who rely on their devices for a sense of security. Ensure students have access to counseling services, create safe spaces within the school and incorporate mindfulness practices to help manage anxiety.

What We Know So Far: Schools that have implemented these strategies report improved student engagement and a more positive classroom environment. Teachers have noted that students are more focused and participate more actively in class discussions.

Implementing Strategies Now to Support Every Student Will Pay Off

There are students in classrooms across America who have never been in a traditional classroom setting before and they are not in kindergarten. This includes students who have been homeschooled or experienced significant educational disruptions.

  • Support for New Classroom Experiences: Implement programs that help these students acclimate to the classroom environment. This might include peer mentoring, orientation sessions and additional academic support.
  • Addressing Homelessness: With homelessness on the rise, it’s crucial to provide support for students with more complex needs. This includes ensuring access to necessities, offering counseling services and creating a supportive school environment.

Investing in School Safety from the Standpoint of Culture is Critical

School safety should be reviewed and improved every year. While many schools invest in physical safety enhancements, the school's culture and the environment's stability are often overlooked as critical investments in safety.

  • Creating a Welcoming Environment: Ensure that students feel welcomed and valued. This includes fostering positive relationships between students and staff, promoting inclusivity and celebrating successes.
  • Supporting Mental Wellness: The mental wellness of both students and staff is crucial for a positive school culture. Provide access to mental health resources, incorporate mindfulness practices and ensure that the school environment supports the well-being of everyone.

Key Questions to Consider:

  1. Do students feel welcomed?
  2. Is the staff happy and supportive of students?
  3. Do students and staff feel valued?
  4. Is school a positive or negative experience for students?
  5. Is teaching a positive or negative experience for teachers?
