Well-Managed Schools

<li>Ask students questions to assess their background knowledge and prior experiences using the skill.</li>
<li>PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ACTIVITY (reasons for the skill): Invite students to practice the skill by having them identify things or situations that require asking for permission. Ask students:
<ul>
<li>What are some things you need permission to do or in what circumstances should you ask first?</li>
<li>What do you need to ask permission for when you are: at the playground, in the cafeteria, library, health office, etc.?</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>State the name, steps and reasons for using the skill.</li>
<li>Model or demonstrate the skill.</li>
<li>Role-play scenarios:
<ul>
<li>Ask a classmate if you can sit with them at lunch.</li>
<li>You forget your homework and ask the teacher if you can turn it in late.</li>
<li>Your partner is using the glue you need to complete your project. Ask to use it after they finish.</li>
<li>You aren&rsquo;t feeling well. You ask the teacher if you can go see the nurse.</li>
</ul>

<li>Review the steps of the skill as well as the reasons for using it.</li>

<li>Share examples you&rsquo;ve seen in the classroom.</li>
<li>Identify people, areas and/or situations where students might use the skill at school.</li>
<li>Explain any behavioral steps or additional skills which may need to be altered or added to perform the skill in these different environment/situations.</li>
<li>Invite students to practice the skill with a partner using a role-play scenario they create or one you provide.</li>
</ul>

Tuesday

<li>Review the steps of the skill as well as the reasons for using it.</li>
<li>Share examples you&rsquo;ve witnessed around school of students using the skill.</li>
<li>Identify people, areas or situations where students might use the skill at home or with other adults and the best person to ask in each situation.</li>
<li>Explain any skill steps or additional skills which may need to be altered or added to perform the skill in these different environments/situations.</li>

<li>Extend learning by introducing the skill of Making a Request. Explain how this skill complements the skill of Asking Permission and when the steps of Making a Request might be more appropriate.

<li>Look at the person.</li>
<li>Use a clear, pleasant voice.</li>
<li>Express your request in the form of a question.</li>
<li>If your request is granted, remember to say, &ldquo;Thank you.&rdquo;</li>
<li>If your request is denied, remember to accept &ldquo;No&rdquo; for an answer.</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>Write in SEL Journal: Why is it important to ask permission before you do or take something? How would you feel if someone took something of yours without asking?</li>
</ul>

<li>Review the steps of the skill as well as the reasons for using it.</li>
<li>Share examples of how students have used the skill in their community.</li>
<li>Discuss how using the skill has helped them or in what situations it was difficult.</li>
<li>THINK-PAIR-SHARE. Discuss how you might use the skill in a future job/career, hobby or other area of interest.</li>
</ul>
